How to Take Charge of Your Fear

You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do. – Eleanor Roosevelt

I have always been petrified of public speaking, it is one of the most feared things in the world after all! So I really surprised myself when I was asked to present at the doTERRA Leadership Retreat and One Tree Training – and I immediately said yes! Of course I didn’t give it too much thought at the time, it was an incredible opportunity and how could I turn it down? As a doTERRA Diamond Leader and how far this opportunity and company has already pushed me out of my comfort zone, I surely could do this.

A few weeks before and that old fear reared it’s head about public speaking! Did I really think it wouldn’t? My public speaking fears stemmed from an experience about ten years ago, where I did a speech in front of 150 colleagues and students in my past industry. It went so badly that six months after the speech an attendee came up to me and said ‘Hey you’re that lady who really messed up that speech!’. I was mortified and have not braved the stage since.

Last week was the big week, when I had my two speeches in two days. To be honest the first speech went surprisingly well, but for some reason with the second I was so nervous and stumbled right at the beginning. I felt the fear swell in my throat and for a split second I wanted to run out of the room, but I paused and took a deep breath and kept going. I finished my speech and although I covered all the points I wanted to, there was a part of me that still panicked. All of my old fears and self doubts rushed back into my head. Luckily I was supported by my beautiful friends, doTERRA team and family. A lovely friend made me watch the recording and I realised that my presentation was fine and I was just being hard on myself! Remember next time you give something a go, that it’s OK if it is not perfect – nothing ever is! Make sure you celebrate yourself and your accomplishments no matter what.

Some tips that helped me overcome my public speaking fears:

  • Meditation: keeping my mind calm and clear as possible
  • Gratitude: reminding myself what an incredible opportunity I have been given
  • Oils: Peace, Cheer, Console and Balance really helped keep me clear, calm and relaxed
  • Support: surround yourself with positive friends and family
